Clear History / Cache File

It's possible for someone to know which websites you have visited by looking through your computer's history or cache file (automatically saved web pages and graphics). You can clear your history or empty your cache file in your browser's settings. Here's how you do it.

IMPORTANT - The information below may not completely hide your tracks. The safest way to find information on the Internet is to do it in a safe place. This could be at a local library, a friend's house, or at work.

Internet Explorer

To delete your browsing history:

Go to 'Tools' and 'click on 'Delete browsing history'

To clear all record of browsing:

Click on the Tools menu (in the row at the top of the browser)

Select 'Internet Options' from the drop down menu

You should now be on a tab that says 'General' - if not, select 'General'

Under the title, 'Temporary Internet files', click on 'Delete Files'

You may like to also do this:

On the 'Advanced' tab put a tick next to 'Empty temporary interenet files folder when browser is closed'

Then click OK, at the bottom

Older versions of IE

In older versions if IE in the Tools > Internet Options > General > section you can also check the box that says 'delete all offline content,' and, under 'History' click on 'Clear History'

Netscape

To clear cache files:

Click on Edit on the tool bar at the top of the screen

Select Preferences

Click Advanced

Click Cache

Click the Clear Memory Cache button

Click the Clear Disk Cache button

Click OK

AOL

To clear cache files:

Select Preferences

From the pop-up menu, click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet Files section

To clear history files:

In the History section of the same pop-up menu as above, click Clear History.

E-mail

If an abuser has access to your e-mail account, they may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail. If you believe your account is secure, make sure you choose a password that an abuser will not be able to guess.

If an abuser sends you threatening or harassing e-mail messages, they may be printed and saved as evidence of this abuse.

Instant Messaging

If you use instant messaging and your abuser has access to your computer, be aware of and make use of the privacy features of the program you are using. MSN messenger, ICQ, AOL each have slightly different privacy protection features.

Make sure you DO NOT have your computer set to automatically keep a history of your messages if you are concerned about your abuser reading them.

For example, if you are using MSN messenger:

Select 'Options'

Then 'Messages'

Unclick the checkbox for 'message history'
